Patchworked Jeans
This was my second project (the first being a semi-successful attempt to add flares to an old pair of jeans) using my grandmother's handed-down sewing machine. The sewing machine is a beautiful, metal, mechanical Bernina from the 1960's. I really hope I can keep it in its current healthy condition.
The fabric I used was taken from the material of my great-grandmother's evening gown, initially my grandmother had made a maxi skirt out of the material (I plan to rework/reuse the remainder of the skirt at a later date).
These jeans are second-hand, so I expected it when they were a little tight at the waist. Adding inserts at the waist was the start of altering these jeans. Then, I used masking tape to plot out the placement for my patches, cut the material to size and used my sewing machine to make the patches.
To save time and effort, I used fabric glue to stick the patches onto the jeans, slowly replacing the scellotape.
After the patches were glued on, I moved onto embroidery. This is also my first serious embroidery project (sticking to the basics for now). I used chain stitching along the sides of the patches, to both secure them and give the edges a more polished look.
To finish off, I embroidered a simple cross design on the belt loops, and blanket stitches to the tops of all the pockets.
In review: it's definitely not perfectly made, but it's one of my favourite projects to date, and I quite like my alterations to look a little messy - it seems in-keeping with my personality.
