Dorset Buttons

Dorset Buttons
My first buttons :D

Does making buttons count as sewing? Either way, I had a lot of fun working out how to make these (credit to my mum for the idea).
I forgot to take photos of the process for the first (pink) one, because I was with other people at the time. It uses yarn and the basic Dorset button pattern, and I'm hoping to use it on a skirt that I've been planning to make for a while.

The second one I made, was requested by my Dad, who wanted an ammonite button. I couldn't find a pattern for anything similar online, so I made my own.
I used a thick embroidery thread, because I found that the yarn gave a less clean finish to the button.
My pattern started with standard slicking and laying (8 spokes).

For the rounding, I used a back stitch round the centre for one full rotation, but upside-down so the longer, overlapping side of the stitch was on the top.
As I continued rounding, I slowly worked my way up the threads with each stitch to create a spiral that reached all the way to the edge of the button.
Then, I worked my way back down to the centre by looping the thread loosely around the top sections of the spiral to cover them (this is a similar to the laying of the spokes).
I continued working my way round to the lower sections of the spiral, until I met the centre and the whole spiral was covered.

I don't have much embroidery thread or yarn left that I can use to make these buttons, which leaves me potential to experiment with different types of thread (I might need to research what I'm actually meant to be using). So, maybe that will be part of my next button making post (assuming I do more).
